Chicken Dinner: A Short Film on Food in the Pandemic


Chicken Dinner is a short film by Chinmoy Deori on food and religion.

Food has been at the centre of discussions on COVID-19. It becomes a site to understand the relationship between people and different facets of society, including culture and religion. This also became evident during the initial lockdown that was enforced in Assam since 25th March 2020. As the Tablighi Jamaat incident became an example of crisis scapegoating, many people in Assam started avoiding meat from sellers belonging to a particular religion. The relationship between food and religion became starkly evident as avoidance of meat from Muslim sellers once again highlighted the stereotypes and biases that already exist.
