Thinking of the conceptual categories leads us to the notion of their power of explanation of the social processes and realities that a researcher has under observation. In this regard, depending upon the research methodology that is used by a sociologist or social anthropologist with some conceptual categories to begin with in the observation of social realities, need may arise for formulation of new or revision of older conceptual categories. This is how theoretical advancements are made in social sciences (Singh 2009: 179)
With
these beautiful lines, we pay our tribute to one of India’s foremost
sociologists Yogendra Singh. Professor Singh passed away today and we offer our
condolences to his family and friends. He was also one of the founders of the
Centre for the Study of Social Systems (CSSS), Jawaharlal Nehru Univesity (JNU),
New Delhi.
